Healthy eating patterns in childhood and adolescence promote optimal childhood health, growth, and intellectual development; help prevent immediate health problems such as iron deficiency anemia, obesity, eating disorders, and tooth decay; and can prevent long-term health problems such as coronary artery disease, cancer, and stroke. Multisectoral nutrition education can help children and adolescents achieve their full educational potential and good health by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to adopt long-term healthy eating behaviours.

Guiding Objectives The objectives of the task will be for children and young people to learn about healthy eating; to choose and buy healthier foods; to learn how to prepare healthy meals by learning healthier cooking techniques; to try new types of (healthier) foods and/or recipes and to develop lasting healthy eating habits, food preparation choices.

The task is suitable for students aged 11 - 12 years - 5th grade in the Bulgarian educational system.

The questions to be answered by solving the problem are :

  1. What is the content of the foods we eat?
  2. Where do we get our food?
  3. How do we choose our food?
  4. How to prepare healthy food at home?  
  5. What and who influences our nutrition?(factors that influence nutrition)
  6. What about our family's food expenses? Where is water consumption paid for?
  7. What percentage is this of the family budget?
  8. What is the role of spices in food?
  9. What is the optimal weight for my height?
  10. What are the best healthy times and intervals between meals?
  11. How long can the body last without food? How does this affect it?
  12. Sports nutrition?
  13. Contaminants of food products
  14. What is the effect of sugar on our body?
  15. What is the influence of salt?
  16. How do we read food packaging?
  17. How to store food products?

Solution

The possible forms of making a connection between objects in solving the first problem are diverse and caninclude various methods, such as:

  • developing a project on "My healthy diet";
  • developed a research diary - "My way of eating";
  • to organise a healthy food festival;
  • debates on various topics ("For or against carbohydrates", etc.);
  • papers on various topics, etc.

All of the above forms can bemade meaningful through the use of various methods such as debates, role plays, brainstorming, simulations and various experiments.

It is hoped that, once the first task is solved, children and young people in our country will improve their lifestyles and start living healthier lives in the long term.

In developing the different forms of making connections between subjects, children will learn different skills in the disciplines studied at school, namely:

Mathematics - Units. Volume and mass. Fractions. Face of a geometric figure. Using a calculator. Percentages.

Information Technology - Making a presentation, graphic image, using the Internet, layout.

Fine Art - Sculptural Composition. Shapes and proportions. Colour as a means of expression.

Music - Folklore. Autumn - winter holidays. Christmas songs.

Man and Nature - Biology - Human vitalprocesses, structure and functions of the digestive system, digestive system and health. Physics - Thermal phenomenatemperature, heat and heat exchange. Temperature expansion. Thermal insulation. Chemistry- NitratesSolubility of substances. Filtration. Types of mixtures. Waste.

Geography - Climate and food preservation. Natural areas andfeeding. Soils and food- soil fertility. Life and culture of different continents. Population problems on continents - malnutrition, lack of drinkable water, etc.

History and Civilizations - Search and retrieve information on a given indicator - about the food of ancient peoples, foods related to religious beliefs. Relate historical events to the transportation of food across continents

Literature - Food in folklore. Old words for food, extinctfrom the modern language. Works. Creating a narrative.  

Native language - Formal and informal communication. Answer to a life question.
